Scottburgh court delivers hefty sentence

A 26-year-old man has been condemned to spend 140 years behind bars following a devastating trail of violence that terrorised multiple communities across KwaZulu-Natal over the course of two years.

Nsindiso Sakhile Gumede was convicted by the Scottburgh Regional Court on Monday, 17 November 2025, on two counts of murder alongside 12 additional charges. These included attempted murder, carjacking, business robbery, house robbery, and the attempted murder of police officers — offences committed across various parts of the province between 2020 and 2021.

A trail of bloodshed across KZN

The first of Gumede's known murders took place on the morning of 29 August 2020, when the body of 22-year-old Siyanda Mkhize was discovered at Ezimeleni informal settlement in V Section, Umlazi. Mkhize was found lying in a pool of blood, having sustained both gunshot and stab wounds.

Less than a month later, law enforcement officers were called to yet another fatal scene. Fanozi Ncanana was gunned down while driving his microbus along Malukazi Road in Isipingo, having departed from his shop on Nyosini Road. After being struck by multiple bullets, Ncanana lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road and crashed into a nearby house. He was rushed to hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

"Thorough investigations uncovered that Nsindiso Sakhile Gumede was the suspect in both murders, and he was traced and arrested."

Both murder dockets were handed over to the Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit, whose detectives launched an intensive probe into the killings. Their work not only identified Gumede as the perpetrator in both cases but also linked him to a string of additional violent crimes spanning the Umlazi, Bhekithemba, Isipingo, Sawoti and Hibberdene policing precincts.

In total, 14 charges were consolidated and brought before the Scottburgh Regional Court. Meticulous detective work by the Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit proved every single count beyond reasonable doubt, ultimately securing the landmark sentence.

"Shrewd investigation by Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit detectives proved all cases beyond any reasonable doubt and brought closure to Gumede's many victims and their families."

The conviction has been welcomed as a significant victory for justice in KwaZulu-Natal, delivering long-awaited closure to the families of the deceased and the numerous other victims who suffered at the hands of Gumede during his violent crime spree. The 140-year sentence effectively ensures that the convicted killer will never walk free again.

South Africans living in KwaZulu-Natal's most vulnerable communities, particularly informal settlements and transit corridors, stand to benefit from the removal of a prolific violent offender whose crimes disrupted daily life and eroded public safety over two years. The sentence may strengthen confidence in provincial policing units tasked with solving serious crimes, while businesses and commuters in affected areas could see gradual improvements in security. Whether this deters similar criminal activity across the province remains to be seen.
