Violent assault followed by rape
A man from Hoopstad in the Free State has been sentenced to life imprisonment after he was convicted of raping his former girlfriend in a harrowing ordeal that began with an unprovoked attack on her new partner.
The incident unfolded on 13 October 2019 when the 29-year-old woman went to visit her boyfriend. Her ex-boyfriend arrived at the location and launched an assault on the current partner, who fled to the local police station to report the attack.
Following the altercation, the accused forcibly took the victim to his residence where he sexually assaulted her. The woman reported the rape to authorities the following day, setting in motion an investigation that would ultimately lead to a conviction and harsh sentencing.
Decisive investigation secures conviction
The matter was handed to Detective Sergeant Ntomzoto Selemogo of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, who swiftly tracked down and apprehended the 40-year-old suspect. The case proceeded through the Hoopstad Regional Court, where the accused was found guilty on all charges brought against him.
On 30 November 2021, Pheello Johannes Daki received a life sentence for rape, a further two years' imprisonment for assault, and an additional twelve months for contravening a court order.
"We hope this heavy sentence will serve as a deterrent to all would-be rapists especially as we are observing 16 Days of Activism for no violence Against Women and Children."
Lejweleputswa District Commissioner Major General Lerato Molale expressed satisfaction with the severe punishment imposed on the convicted rapist. The senior officer noted the significance of the sentencing during the annual campaign against gender-based violence, voicing hope that it would discourage others from committing similar crimes.
Major General Molale also praised Detective Sergeant Selemogo for the thorough and diligent investigative work that secured the conviction and ensured the perpetrator would face the full might of the law.
South Africa's persistently high rates of gender-based violence make cases like this significant for communities across the country, particularly in smaller towns such as Hoopstad where resources for survivors are often limited. The life sentence reinforces the judiciary's capacity to deliver decisive consequences, which may strengthen public confidence in the criminal justice system.
