Two learners lose their lives in brutal attacks days apart

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has voiced profound grief and dismay after two school pupils were fatally stabbed in separate violent incidents in the province within days of each other.

The department confirmed that a 17-year-old Grade 8 pupil from Forest High School was brutally assaulted and knifed at a park close to the school on Friday, 20 March 2026, shortly after the end of the school day. The teenager was initially taken to a nearby hospital before being moved to a second medical facility, where he ultimately died from his wounds.

In a second tragic incident on Monday, a Grade 12 pupil attending Daleview Secondary School was stabbed to death in an open veld as he made his way home following classes. Law enforcement authorities are currently probing the circumstances of both attacks.

"This is a deeply painful loss for our education community. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and both school communities affected by these tragedies."

Those were the words of Chiloane as he addressed the devastating loss of two young lives in the space of just a few days. The MEC made it clear that any form of violence directed at learners, whether it occurs on school grounds or beyond, remains wholly unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

Counselling teams deployed to support grieving communities

The provincial education department has dispatched psycho-social support teams to both schools to provide counselling and emotional assistance to fellow pupils, teaching staff and the bereaved families as they navigate this harrowing period.

The back-to-back killings have once again thrust the issue of learner safety into sharp focus, raising urgent questions about the dangers young people face during their daily journeys to and from school in Gauteng.

Authorities have urged anyone with information relating to either incident to come forward and assist investigators as they work to bring those responsible to justice.

The fatal stabbings of two Gauteng learners within days of each other underscore a persistent crisis around pupil safety beyond school gates, affecting families, educators, and communities across the province. Such violence can erode public confidence in the safety of daily school commutes, placing additional pressure on law enforcement and education authorities to implement protective measures. How provincial leaders respond in the coming weeks will likely shape broader policy discussions around learner security infrastructure in South Africa.
