Swift action prevents potential killing in North West

A late-night intelligence operation in Vryburg led to the arrest of four suspects who were allegedly en route to carry out a murder in Ganyesa on Monday evening, 8 December 2025. The arrests came after law enforcement received a tip-off about a white Ford Ranger carrying unidentified occupants with deadly intentions.

Officers from the Tactical Response Team, Public Order Policing and Visible Policing units immediately launched coordinated vehicle patrols across the area to locate the suspicious vehicle. Their search proved fruitful when the Ford Ranger was spotted at a petrol station in the town.

A subsequent search of the vehicle on Market Street uncovered two pistols along with multiple rounds of ammunition concealed in a bag. When questioned, none of the four occupants could offer a satisfactory explanation or produce valid documentation proving lawful ownership of the weapons. They were promptly taken into custody on charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, as well as conspiracy to commit murder.

Suspects remanded in custody

The accused — Tumelo Gompe, aged 44, Tshepiso Mangate, aged 43, Rasake Matsapa, aged 33, and Sefatsa Ramokoni, aged 28 — made their first court appearance at the Vryburg District Court on Wednesday, 10 December 2025. All four were remanded in custody and are expected back before the same court on Monday, 15 December 2025.

Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Dr Ryno Naidoo praised the officers involved for their alertness and rapid response, which he said had likely prevented a violent crime from being carried out.

"The police will remain committed in keeping the inhabitants of North West safe and the removal of illegal firearms from the streets, will indeed prevent future crimes."

The successful operation underscores the critical role that crime intelligence and inter-unit cooperation play in combating violent crime across the province. By acting swiftly on the information received, officers were able to neutralise a potential threat before any harm was done, while simultaneously taking unlicensed weapons out of circulation.

Authorities have urged community members to continue reporting suspicious activity, noting that public cooperation remains essential in the fight against gun violence and organised criminal activity in the North West.

The interception of an alleged murder plot in Vryburg highlights the persistent threat of gun violence and organised crime in rural North West communities, where residents often feel vulnerable due to limited policing resources. For local businesses and residents in areas like Ganyesa, such operations reinforce confidence in law enforcement's capacity to act on intelligence. The case's progression through the courts will signal whether the justice system can effectively deter similar conspiracies in the province.
