Multi-agency raid uncovers gold and over R1 million in cash

A coordinated law enforcement operation in Evander, Mpumalanga, has led to the arrest of five suspects linked to illegal dealings in precious metals, after raids on three separate properties yielded gold bearing material, a gold nugget and more than R1 million in cash.

Sibusiso Malala (25), Johannes Dlamini (31), Itai Daniel Masingitana (31), Moses Daniel Masingitana (25) and Dumisani Rapheul Nzinga (54) were taken into custody on Saturday, 19 July 2025, and face charges under the Precious Metals Act, Act 37 of 2005.

The operation was carried out jointly by members of the Hawks' Johannesburg-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department and its K9 Dog Unit. Armed with search warrants, officers descended on three addresses in the Evander area.

Cash haul and fleeing property owner

At the first property, four of the accused were apprehended after officers discovered them offloading gold bearing material from a Toyota Hilux. A fifth suspect was nabbed after law enforcement officials noticed his vehicle travelling along Braamfisher Drive and followed up at his residence.

"Officers found cash amounting to R30 000 as well as one gold nugget inside the house and another inside his vehicle."

The most significant discovery came at the third property, where investigators recovered R1 million in cash stashed in various rooms throughout the dwelling. The owner of that residence has thus far managed to evade arrest, and authorities are understood to be pursuing further leads.

All five suspects made their initial appearance before the Evander Magistrate Court on Monday, 21 July 2025. The presiding officer postponed proceedings to Wednesday, 23 July 2025, when a formal bail application is expected to be heard.

The arrests underscore the ongoing challenge posed by illicit precious metals trafficking in Gauteng and Mpumalanga, with law enforcement agencies intensifying joint operations to disrupt organised criminal networks profiting from the illegal gold trade.

South Africa's gold-rich regions continue to face significant threats from illegal mining and precious metals trafficking, which drain billions from the formal economy annually and fuel violent criminal networks in mining communities. For residents of Mpumalanga and Gauteng, these operations undermine legitimate mining businesses, reduce tax revenue that could fund local services, and pose serious safety risks. With one property owner still at large, further arrests and expanded multi-agency operations are likely in the coming weeks.
