Officer gunned down inside retail store
A female police sergeant was shot dead and her colleague disarmed during a brazen attack inside a retail store in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni, on Thursday 26 August 2021. The incident has sent shockwaves through the South African Police Service, coming during Women's Month — a period meant to honour the contributions and sacrifices of women across the country.
Sergeant Mogale was struck by a bullet to the head after unknown suspects ambushed her and her partner, Sergeant Petje, while the two armed officers were inside the store. The attackers fled the scene with both officers' service pistols. Sergeant Petje was not harmed during the violent confrontation.
The deadly assault marks yet another painful loss for the police service, which has repeatedly mourned members killed in the line of duty. That this attack targeted two female officers during a month dedicated to celebrating women has deepened the sense of grief within law enforcement ranks.
"The South African Police Service has suffered yet another devastating blow, this time with the attack and robbery of two armed female members, one of whom was fatally wounded in Ekurhuleni."
Minister Cele to visit bereaved family
Police Minister Cele confirmed plans to visit the families of both officers on Friday 27 August 2021. The Minister was scheduled to first receive a comprehensive briefing on the incident from provincial police management at Kempton Park Police Station, with proceedings set to begin at 09:00.
Following the briefing, the Minister intended to travel to the homes of both Sergeant Mogale and Sergeant Petje to offer condolences and support. The visits underscored the gravity with which the national police leadership viewed the attack on its members.
Authorities have launched a manhunt for the unidentified suspects responsible for the killing. The stolen service firearms remain a critical concern, as weapons taken from police officers frequently resurface in subsequent violent crimes.
The incident has reignited calls for stronger measures to protect officers on duty, particularly those deployed in high-risk environments. As investigations continue, the police service faces mounting pressure to bring those responsible for Sergeant Mogale's murder to justice swiftly.
