Grandmother shot dead in evening attack
A 71-year-old woman was fatally shot inside her home in Makhenkesi Township, Mqanduli, in what police have described as a brazen attack that has left the community reeling. The shooting took place on Saturday, 17 January, between 19:00 and 20:00, in Mankuntywana Street.
According to investigators, an unidentified man gained entry to the residence and made his way directly to the victim's bedroom, where he shot her in the upper body. The woman was declared dead at the scene.
At the time of the fatal incident, the elderly woman's 12-year-old granddaughter was present in the house. Mercifully, the child was not injured during the attack.
"Mqanduli police are appealing to anyone with information that could assist in tracing a suspect following the fatal shooting of a 71-year-old woman in Makhenkesi Township, Mankuntywana Street."
Motive remains a mystery
Authorities have confirmed that the reason behind the killing remains unclear at this stage. Detectives have registered a murder case and launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The brazen nature of the attack — carried out while a young child was in the home — has heightened concerns among residents of the quiet township. Investigators are working to establish whether the victim was specifically targeted or whether the shooting was opportunistic in nature.
Police have urged members of the public who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area on the evening in question, or who possess any information that could lead to the identification and arrest of the suspect, to come forward without delay.
Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact their nearest police station or make use of the anonymous tip-off line. All information received will be treated with the strictest confidence, authorities have assured.
The brutal killing of a 71-year-old grandmother in her Mqanduli home underscores the persistent threat of violent crime facing vulnerable residents across South Africa's rural townships. Such attacks erode the sense of safety in communities where elderly people often care for young dependants, raising urgent questions about policing capacity in underserved areas. The unresolved motive and absence of arrests may further strain public confidence, while the investigation's outcome could signal whether rural communities receive adequate crime-prevention support.
