Couple attacked after returning from church

Two suspects have been apprehended following a brazen house robbery on a farm near Smithfield in the Free State, after a rapid joint effort by police, private security firms, and local farmers brought the ordeal to a swift conclusion.

The harrowing incident unfolded on Sunday, 3 August 2025, at approximately 13:30, when a couple aged 78 and 81 returned to their farmstead after a church service. As the woman made her way towards the kitchen entrance, she was ambushed by two unknown assailants who overpowered her, assaulted her, and brandished knives in a terrifying confrontation.

The attackers forced the woman back outside to where her husband was still walking towards the house. Both victims were then dragged inside and restrained with cable ties while the suspects ransacked the property. The robbers made off with cellphones, cash, and jewellery, and also compelled the husband to make a monetary transfer.

In a further act of cruelty, the suspects shoved the elderly man into his own vehicle and drove away with him before eventually abandoning him in the farm's driveway. They then fled the scene in the stolen vehicle.

Arrests made within hours

Once freed, the victims immediately alerted neighbouring farmers and contacted law enforcement, triggering a coordinated response. Two men, aged 29 and 36, were intercepted and taken into custody on the road to Bethulie shortly after the robbery. Cash and the stolen vehicle were recovered during the arrest.

Free State Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane has directed the Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit to spearhead a thorough investigation into the matter. Forensic specialists have already examined the crime scenes to gather further evidence.

"The seamless cooperation between the community, our rural safety partners, and units ensured these suspects were taken off the streets before sunset. This is a textbook example of integrated rural safety."

Lieutenant General Motswenyane conveyed her heartfelt gratitude to the farming community, private security operators, and all responding officers for their decisive and rapid action in bringing the suspects to justice.

The two accused remain behind bars and face charges of house robbery with aggravating circumstances, theft of a motor vehicle, and possession of suspected stolen property. The investigation continues, with authorities indicating that further developments will be communicated as they arise.
