Massive operation yields hundreds of arrests
Law enforcement authorities in the Eastern Cape have apprehended more than 600 suspects during an intensive week-long crackdown on crime across the province. The operation, conducted under the banner of Operation Shanela, spanned all eight policing districts and targeted a wide range of criminal activities plaguing local communities.
Officers working alongside various stakeholders carried out extensive stop-and-search operations, set up roadblocks, inspected liquor outlets for regulatory compliance, and engaged with residents and school pupils through crime awareness campaigns offering practical safety advice.
The scale of the operation was considerable, with a total of 21 291 individuals searched during the course of the week. The searches led to the recovery of 17 unlicensed firearms along with ammunition, as well as 669 mandrax tablets found in the possession of those taken into custody.

The arrested suspects face a broad spectrum of charges, including murder, attempted murder, rape, robbery, residential burglary, assault, drug dealing, and theft from motor vehicles. The diversity of offences underscores the wide-reaching nature of the provincial crime-fighting initiative.
Drunk drivers nabbed at roadblocks
In addition to the broader arrests, roadblock operations led to 22 motorists being taken into custody for driving under the influence of alcohol. All of those detained on drunk driving charges were expected to make appearances in various Magistrate's Courts within the Eastern Cape jurisdiction.
Provincial policing leadership indicated that efforts to curb contact crimes, hijackings, and house robberies remain a top priority. Authorities have committed to maintaining heightened visibility in identified crime hotspots to ensure safer communities across the region.
