A 26-year-old man has been handed a 15-year prison sentence for the violent killing of his girlfriend in Delft, Western Cape, following a swift investigation that saw him behind bars within 24 hours of the crime.
Brutal attack claimed young woman's life
Peter Matlabeyane was convicted at the Bellville Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, 17 May 2023, for the murder of 25-year-old Zintle Ngxokwana. The young woman died on 27 June 2021 at a property in Abadare Street, N2 Gateway, Delft, after Matlabeyane — her boyfriend at the time — assaulted her with a ceramic toilet seat and a broom stick.
The case was handed to Detective Warrant Officer Thobela Nzimani of the Delft detective unit, who wasted no time in pursuing every available lead. Within hours, Nzimani had gathered all witness statements linking Matlabeyane to the killing, and by 28 June 2021 — less than a day after the crime was committed — the suspect had been arrested and charged.
"Violence against women and children remains at the top of the Western Cape's priority list and therefore, we will do everything possible to bring perpetrators thereof to book."
The determined detective also ensured the case docket was fully prepared for court proceedings, laying the groundwork for what would ultimately prove a successful prosecution. Her diligence in securing evidence and witness cooperation was instrumental in obtaining the conviction nearly two years later.
Detective praised for outstanding work
Warrant Officer Nzimani received commendation for her exceptional efforts in bringing Matlabeyane to justice. Her rapid response and thorough investigative work ensured that the suspect was removed from society and held accountable for the brutal attack on Ngxokwana.
The conviction underscores the Western Cape's commitment to tackling gender-based violence head-on. Authorities in the province have repeatedly stated that crimes against women and children are treated as a top priority, with dedicated resources allocated to ensure perpetrators face the full weight of the law.
Matlabeyane will serve his 15-year sentence as direct imprisonment, offering no prospect of an early reduction. The outcome brings a measure of justice for the family of Zintle Ngxokwana, whose life was cut tragically short at just 25 years of age.
South Africa's devastating rates of gender-based violence make cases like this one significant for communities nationwide, particularly in the Western Cape where femicide remains a persistent crisis. The swift arrest and successful prosecution demonstrate that dedicated detective work can deliver accountability, potentially strengthening public confidence in the justice system. For residents of Delft and similar communities, the outcome may offer cautious hope that sustained law enforcement commitment could help deter future acts of intimate partner violence.
