Armed intruders storm Free State home in dead of night
A Petrus Steyn businessman was snatched from his residence during a violent armed robbery in the early hours of Monday morning, sparking a rapid multi-agency police operation that culminated in his safe recovery and four arrests in the Qwaqwa area.
The ordeal began at roughly 00:30 on 16 March 2026, when the victim — a Bangladeshi foreign national — and his wife were woken by suspicious sounds outside their home. Upon checking, they spotted three balaclava-clad individuals attempting to force their way into the property. The couple immediately moved their children to a separate room to seek shelter.
The intruders, who were carrying handguns, gained entry and demanded cash from the family. They forced the husband to the ground and bound his hands behind his back with rope before seizing an undisclosed sum of money. The armed men then dragged the businessman from the house and sped off in his white Mazda CX-3 SUV.
"Police acted swiftly and successfully arrested four suspects and recovered the victim's vehicle after a businessman was allegedly robbed and kidnapped at his residence in Petrus Steyn."
Coordinated operation leads to swift arrests
Neighbouring stations were placed on high alert immediately after the incident, with a description of the stolen vehicle circulated widely. Intelligence gathered later that day pinpointed the suspects and the hijacked SUV in the Qwaqwa district, prompting the launch of a coordinated response.
The joint operation drew together officers from the Petrus Steyn station, the Phuthaditjhaba Tactical Response Team, Crime Intelligence, the Detective Service, the Public Order Police Unit, and the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Detective Services. The team converged on a farm in the area, where they located both the white Mazda CX-3 and a charcoal Ford Ranger.
Four suspects were taken into custody at the scene, and the kidnapped businessman was found alive and uninjured. All four individuals hail from the Qwaqwa area. Authorities have confirmed that additional suspects remain on the run and efforts to track them down are continuing.
The quartet is set to face charges of armed robbery and kidnapping when they stand before the Petrus Steyn Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, 18 March 2026. The investigation into the remaining suspects is ongoing.
