Key suspect nabbed in Johannesburg
A major breakthrough has been made in the murder investigation of Marius van der Merwe — widely known as "Witness D" from the Madlanga Commission trial — after law enforcement officers apprehended a suspect believed to be the triggerman in his killing.
The arrest took place in Johannesburg on Saturday, following what authorities described as the gathering of overwhelming evidence against the individual. A dedicated task team, assembled on presidential instruction and headed by national police commissioner Gen. Fannie Masemola, carried out the operation.
Brig. Athlenda Mathe, the police spokesperson, confirmed that the specialist unit — established specifically to probe matters stemming from the Madlanga commission of inquiry — had moved swiftly since its formation.
"The team took over the investigation shortly after their appointment. After checking the available information and evidence, further investigative work was carried out which ultimately led to the obtaining of a J50 warrant for the suspect's arrest," said Mathe.
Vehicle linked to murder seized
According to Mathe, the arrest warrant was secured earlier in the week, after which investigators tracked the suspect to his location and took him into custody over the weekend.
The task team has also launched search and seizure operations at multiple addresses believed to be connected to the accused. Critically, a vehicle suspected of having been used on the day Van der Merwe was gunned down has been found and impounded by authorities.
"Members of the team are engaged in a search and seizure operation at several addresses that are connected to the suspect. A vehicle that is believed to have been used on the day of Van der Merwe's murder has already been located. This vehicle has been seized."
The suspect is set to appear before the Brakpan Magistrate's Court on Monday, where he will face charges related to the killing. Gen. Masemola praised the task force for acting decisively and delivering results within a short timeframe since taking charge of the case.
