Balaclava-clad attacker assaults farmer's wife near Coligny - crime and justice in South Africa

Woman attacked from behind at farm stables

A 50-year-old farmer's wife was brutally attacked by an unknown assailant wearing a balaclava at a farm outside Coligny in the North West province, prompting a police investigation into the violent incident.

The assault took place on Tuesday, 17 March 2026, at roughly 16:30, when the woman stepped out of her home to feed a horse at the property's stables. The suspect ambushed her from behind, striking her with a steel object before she managed to fight him off. The attacker then fled the scene on foot.

Despite sustaining injuries during the ordeal, the victim was taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention and was discharged later that same day. Authorities have since opened a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (Assault GBH) in connection with the attack.

No arrests yet as motive remains unclear

Investigators have confirmed that no arrests have been made thus far, and the motive behind the assault remains unknown. The case is currently under active investigation as detectives work to identify and apprehend the suspect.

North West Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General (Dr) Ryno Nadioo, has spoken out firmly against the attack.

"Crimes targeting farming communities remain a priority for the police."

Major General Nadioo strongly condemned the incident and reaffirmed law enforcement's commitment to ensuring the safety of those living and working on farms across the province. The attack has once again highlighted the ongoing security concerns faced by agricultural communities in the North West.

Authorities have urged anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to contact the Coligny police or report tips anonymously through the relevant crime reporting channels. The case continues to be a priority for local detectives as they pursue all available leads.

Farm attacks remain a deeply concerning issue across South Africa's agricultural sector, with incidents like this one near Coligny fueling anxiety among rural communities already grappling with security challenges. The assault could discourage farm workers and owners, potentially affecting agricultural productivity in the North West province. With no arrests made and the motive still unclear, investigators face pressure to deliver results swiftly, as unresolved cases risk eroding trust between farming communities and law enforcement.
