Security officer robbed at gunpoint while walking to work
A 31-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the armed robbery of a security officer who was attacked while making his way to work along a Free State road in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The incident took place at roughly 04:30 on 26 March 2026 along the R546 route between Vrede and Cornelia. The victim, a security officer residing in an informal settlement on the outskirts of Vrede, was reportedly confronted by two armed men as he walked towards his workplace in Cornelia.
According to investigators, the pair allegedly threatened the man with a firearm and ordered him to sit down before searching him. The assailants made off with an undisclosed sum of cash from his wallet, his firearm licence, and his official access card.
"The suspects further forced the victim to remove his security uniform trousers and instructed him to run towards an open field."
After being stripped of part of his uniform and ordered to flee into the veld, the victim managed to make his way to his parents' home, where he sought help and alerted authorities. He told police that the two attackers were known to him, which proved instrumental in the subsequent investigation.
Swift arrest as manhunt continues for second suspect
Police moved rapidly following the report, apprehending one of the two suspects by approximately 08:00 on the same day — less than four hours after the crime was committed. The arrested individual, who hails from Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal, was due to appear before the Vrede Magistrate's Court on Friday, 27 March 2026, on a charge of armed robbery.
A case of armed robbery has been opened, and the search for the second suspect continues. Authorities have urged members of the public to exercise caution and avoid walking alone, particularly during the early morning and late evening hours.
"Community members are urged not to walk or hike alone, especially during early morning or late evening hours. Individuals are advised to travel in groups or arrange accompaniment to enhance personal safety."
The arrest has been welcomed as a demonstration of effective policing in the region, though residents remain on edge as the second suspect is still at large. Anyone with information that could assist in locating the outstanding suspect has been encouraged to contact their nearest police station.
The armed robbery of a security officer walking to work highlights the persistent threat facing workers who commute on foot during early morning hours across rural South Africa. Such incidents undermine confidence in personal safety along key transport routes and can deter economic activity in small towns like Vrede and Cornelia. The swift arrest demonstrates law enforcement capability, though the outstanding suspect and broader crime trends in the Free State suggest continued vigilance remains essential for vulnerable communities.
