Suspect linked to multiple rapes of 12-year-old victims
A 34-year-old Zimbabwean national believed to be a serial rapist has been apprehended by the Provincial Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) in the North West, following his alleged involvement in the sexual assault of three girls, all aged 12.
The man was taken into custody at his home in Ikageng Extension in Klipgat, near Brits, on Tuesday, 2 December 2024. His arrest came after one of the victims' mothers discovered her daughter at the suspect's residence on the evening of Sunday, 1 December 2024. The child subsequently disclosed to her mother that the man had raped her, prompting the mother to alert authorities without delay.
Investigators believe the pattern of abuse stretches back to January 2024. The victim was reportedly part of a group of young girls who were enticed to the accused's home, where he allegedly offered them money before sexually assaulting them. None of the incidents had previously been brought to the attention of law enforcement.
"Police will continue to work hard to ensure that criminals are brought to book and face the full might of the law."
Authorities have indicated that the accused is residing in South Africa illegally, and they have not ruled out the possibility of connecting him to additional cases of a similar nature. The full extent of his alleged offending remains under investigation as detectives work to identify further potential victims.
Court appearance and remand
The suspect made his first appearance before the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, 4 December 2024, where he was denied bail and remanded in custody. His next court date was set for Monday, 20 January 2025.
North West Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, commended the investigating officer for exceptional dedication and tireless efforts in securing the arrest. The apprehension notably took place during the annual 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign, underscoring the ongoing commitment of law enforcement to tackling gender-based violence in the province.

The case has once again highlighted the vulnerability of children in communities across South Africa and the critical importance of parents and community members reporting suspected abuse to the authorities promptly. Investigators are urging anyone with information that may be linked to the accused to come forward.
