Late collapse hands American the title

Cameron Young produced a stunning finish to claim the Players Championship at Ponte Vedra Beach in Florida on Sunday, overtaking England's Matt Fitzpatrick in a nerve-shredding climax to one of the American PGA Series' most prestigious tournaments.

Fitzpatrick held a one-stroke advantage heading to the 17th hole, but his challenge unravelled when he carded a bogey on the 18th. Young, displaying remarkable composure under pressure, sealed the deal with a birdie on the 17th and a steady par on the closing hole to finish on 275 strokes, 13 under par.

The victory earned Young a staggering $4.5 million in prize money — roughly R75.8 million — while Fitzpatrick's runner-up cheque of $2.2 million (R37.9 million) offered some consolation after his agonising late stumble. The Englishman finished one stroke back on 276, 12 under par.

"On any golf course you need to be strong-headed, have nerves of steel and be able to concentrate until the last putt is successfully rolled."

American Xander Schauffele claimed third place on 277 (-11), with Scotland's Robert McIntyre a further shot behind in fourth on 278 (-10). Sweden's Ludwig Aaberg, who had held the lead after the third round, endured a difficult final day, carding 76 to slip into a share of fifth on 278 (-10). Neither world number one Scottie Scheffler (283, -5) nor Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy (288, level par) were able to mount a serious challenge.

Van Tonder storms to Serengeti triumph

Closer to home, Daniel van Tonder delivered a breathtaking finish of his own to win the Serengeti Playoffs at the Serengeti golf estate outside Kempton Park. The South African fired two birdies and an eagle across the final three holes to pull clear of the field and secure a two-shot victory.

Van Tonder's blistering final-round 63 carried him to a tournament total of 267, a remarkable 21 under par. Germany's Allen John and fellow South African Wilco Nienaber shared second place on 269 (-19), unable to match Van Tonder's devastating late surge.

"Van Tonder kept his composure and delivered when it mattered most, closing with two birdies and an eagle over the last three holes."

JC Ritchie finished alone in fourth on 270 (-18), while Jaco Prinsloo and Martin Vorster rounded out the top five, both posting totals of 271, seventeen under par. It was a dominant display from Van Tonder in the Sunshine Series event, capping a memorable weekend of golf on both sides of the Atlantic.

South African golf fans can celebrate Daniel van Tonder's commanding Serengeti Playoffs victory, which highlights the depth of talent on the Sunshine Series and boosts the profile of local tournament golf. Strong performances by Nienaber, Ritchie, Prinsloo, and Vorster further underscore the competitiveness of the domestic circuit. Continued success at events like these could attract greater sponsorship and international attention, strengthening the local golfing economy and inspiring the next generation of South African players.
