Fatal crash claims seven lives near Mokopane
Seven people lost their lives in a devastating head-on collision on the R101 road between Mookgophong and Mokopane in Limpopo's Waterberg District during the early hours of Sunday, 11 February 2024. The crash, which occurred near Tobias, involved a Renault sedan and a Toyota light delivery vehicle, prompting an urgent investigation ordered by the province's top police official.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has instructed an immediate inquiry into the circumstances that led to the deadly smash. The Toyota bakkie was travelling from Mookgophong in the direction of Mokopane when it was struck head-on by the Renault sedan.
All five occupants of the Renault sedan died at the scene. Two passengers in the Toyota light delivery vehicle — a police officer and a suspect who was being transported — were also killed on impact. The driver of the Toyota, a Sergeant, was rushed to hospital where he is currently receiving medical treatment.
Police officer among the dead
One of the deceased passengers from the Toyota has been identified as Constable M.M. Makwela, who was stationed at Naboomspruit. The identity of the inmate who also died at the scene, along with the five victims from the Renault, will only be made public once their next of kin have been informed.
"The Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has sent messages of condolences to the bereaved families and wishes the driver a speedy recovery."
Authorities have confirmed that the precise cause of the horrific accident remains unknown at this stage. Investigators are working to piece together the sequence of events that led to the collision, which left a trail of destruction on one of Limpopo's busiest routes.
