First-ever national gathering to tackle SA's transport crisis
President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Monday deliver the keynote address at the first-ever National Transport Conference, taking place at Gallagher Estate in Midrand. The landmark event, themed "Transport: The Driver for Growth, Job Creation, Inclusivity and Sustainability", is expected to draw key decision-makers, investors and innovators from across the country and beyond.
The conference has been designed as a platform where stakeholders from government, the private sector and civil society can chart a new course for South Africa's transport sector and its critical role in driving the nation's development agenda.
According to the Presidency, the summit will confront the most urgent challenges facing the sector head-on, with failing passenger rail networks and congested ports and freight corridors topping the list of priorities.
"Given the role of transport as a facilitator of economic growth and an enabler of social development, the conference will tackle the sector's most pressing issues. These include modernising failing passenger rail systems and resolving port and freight bottlenecks."
Beyond rail and freight, delegates will also turn their attention to improving road safety, clearing long-standing infrastructure backlogs and working towards climate and sustainability commitments. The gathering is intended to forge a unified vision for the future of transport in South Africa while fostering cooperation across multiple sectors and all tiers of government.
Wide-ranging participation and concrete outcomes expected
The conference will also serve as a vehicle for advancing the strategic priorities of the Department of Transport, while creating opportunities for knowledge exchange between government officials, private enterprises, transport industry players and the academic community.
