Ramaphosa set to open landmark transport summit in Midrand - South African news

First-ever national gathering to tackle SA's transport crisis

President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Monday deliver the keynote address at the first-ever National Transport Conference, taking place at Gallagher Estate in Midrand. The landmark event, themed "Transport: The Driver for Growth, Job Creation, Inclusivity and Sustainability", is expected to draw key decision-makers, investors and innovators from across the country and beyond.

The conference has been designed as a platform where stakeholders from government, the private sector and civil society can chart a new course for South Africa's transport sector and its critical role in driving the nation's development agenda.

According to the Presidency, the summit will confront the most urgent challenges facing the sector head-on, with failing passenger rail networks and congested ports and freight corridors topping the list of priorities.

"Given the role of transport as a facilitator of economic growth and an enabler of social development, the conference will tackle the sector's most pressing issues. These include modernising failing passenger rail systems and resolving port and freight bottlenecks."

Beyond rail and freight, delegates will also turn their attention to improving road safety, clearing long-standing infrastructure backlogs and working towards climate and sustainability commitments. The gathering is intended to forge a unified vision for the future of transport in South Africa while fostering cooperation across multiple sectors and all tiers of government.

Wide-ranging participation and concrete outcomes expected

The conference will also serve as a vehicle for advancing the strategic priorities of the Department of Transport, while creating opportunities for knowledge exchange between government officials, private enterprises, transport industry players and the academic community.

Organisers have set ambitious goals for the event, including the strengthening of cross-sector partnerships, firm commitments to drive forward critical transport priorities and the adoption of evidence-based solutions aimed at overhauling the country's transport infrastructure and services.

A broad spectrum of participants is expected to attend, ranging from national, provincial and local government officials to representatives of state-owned enterprises, transport operators and industry bodies. Financial institutions, academics, commuter organisations and civil society groups will also be represented. Delegates from Southern African Development Community member states and international transport stakeholders are likewise expected to take part in the proceedings, underlining the regional significance of the gathering.

The inaugural conference marks a significant step in efforts to position transport as a cornerstone of South Africa's economic growth strategy, with the potential to unlock job creation and promote inclusive development across the country.

South Africa's crumbling rail networks, congested ports and deteriorating road infrastructure have long stifled economic productivity, raised costs for businesses and left millions of commuters stranded without reliable public transport. The outcomes of this inaugural summit could shape investment flows, infrastructure spending priorities and regulatory reforms for years to come, directly affecting freight logistics, job creation in construction and manufacturing, and the daily commute of ordinary South Africans navigating an overburdened transport system.
