Record turnout delivers massive economic windfall
The LIV golf tournament held at Steyn City in northern Johannesburg over the weekend pulled in more than 100 000 domestic and international spectators, with early projections suggesting the event pumped close to R1 billion into the Gauteng economy.
The provincial government hailed the occasion as a triumph of world-class event hosting, praising organisers, partners and residents alike for their role in delivering the prestigious sporting spectacle. Gauteng provincial government spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga described the tournament as a top-tier sporting occasion that brought substantial economic gains to the region and elevated the country's profile on the global stage.
Visitors poured into the city through both Lanseria and OR Tambo international airports, fuelling heightened demand for accommodation, dining, transport and entertainment. The influx provided a significant boost to employment in the hospitality and retail sectors, underlining the ripple effect that major events have on the broader economy.
"The two events are a clear indication that Gauteng is the destination of choice for major international events, not only in South Africa, but also on the African continent."
The tournament followed closely on the heels of the G20 leaders' summit, which was also staged in the province, further cementing Gauteng's reputation as a premier destination for high-profile gatherings on the continent. Projected global viewership for the golf event was anticipated to reach nearly one billion households across 200 international territories.
Return confirmed for next year as province eyes R23 billion tourism target
Early figures indicate the tournament aligns with the objectives of the Visit Gauteng: Zwakala campaign, which aims to generate R23 billion in tourism revenue during the current financial year. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, alongside Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie, had spearheaded the bid to bring the tournament to the province as part of a broader strategy to position Gauteng as a leading hub for business and lifestyle events.
"The decision is a powerful statement of confidence in our province and its people, and it shows that Gauteng is still a world-class destination for tourism, investments and great events."
Organisers have already confirmed the tournament will return to Gauteng next year — an announcement warmly received by provincial leadership, who view hosting major events as one of the most effective tools for driving economic growth, tourism and social transformation.
The provincial government noted that a comprehensive security strategy involving police, municipal law enforcement and private security firms ensured the event proceeded without incident. Coordinated efforts focused on managing access routes, escorting VIP delegations and safeguarding critical infrastructure throughout the weekend.
Ahead of the tournament, national, provincial and local authorities undertook extensive infrastructure upgrades, including pothole repairs, streetlight rehabilitation and expanded cleaning operations. Lesufi commended all tiers of government for their exceptional delivery of municipal, health and safety services during the event.
