Top performers recognised at Durban ceremony

Sixty outstanding South African Police Service employees were celebrated for exceptional dedication to duty at the KwaZulu-Natal Excellence Awards, held at the Durban International Convention Centre on Friday, 29 September 2023. The prestigious event acknowledged both sworn officers and civilian support staff across multiple categories, spotlighting those whose contributions have gone well beyond what is expected of them.

Sundumbili Police Station earned the coveted Best Station of the Year Award, having met every benchmark required — from successful inspections to measurable reductions in crime. The station's consistent service delivery to the surrounding community set it apart from competitors across the province.

In the Visible Policing and Operations Team of the Year category, members from Point Police Station emerged victorious, beating out strong contenders from Newcastle and Empangeni. Their work on the ground in maintaining a visible law enforcement presence contributed significantly to their recognition.

Detectives and innovators take centre stage

Brigadier Vela Cele, the Detective Commander stationed at the eThekwini District, took home the Senior Manager of the Year Award. Under his leadership, district detective teams have secured major breakthroughs in high-profile investigations, tracking down suspects and ensuring they face justice. His strategic guidance has been instrumental in putting dangerous criminals behind bars.

Sergeant Msizi Mkhize of Mountain Rise Police Station was named Detective and Forensic Employee of the Year, while one of the evening's most notable accolades — the Provincial Commissioner's Special Award — went to Warrant Officer Sabelo Xaba from the Umlazi K9 Unit.

"Warrant Officer Xaba demonstrated a pioneering act of genius when he created a Provincial Crime Prevention WhatsApp Group which incorporated the police, private security companies and other law enforcement agencies."

The innovative communication platform has proven remarkably effective in the fight against crime. Through real-time information sharing on the group, numerous hijacked vehicles have been recovered, suspects have been apprehended, and response times by law enforcement agencies have improved dramatically. The initiative highlights how creative thinking and collaboration between security stakeholders can yield tangible results in combating crime.

Constable Mbalenhle Msomi from Mpumalanga Police Station was honoured with the Woman of the Year Award, recognising her outstanding contribution to policing. Reservist Constable Wonderboy Nkosi from Hluhluwe Police Station claimed the Reservist of the Year Award for his dedicated voluntary service. The Community Policing Forum of the Year accolade was awarded to Mr Mazizi Katamzi, who served as chairperson of the Colenso Policing Forum during the period under review. His efforts in fostering cooperation between civilians and law enforcement earned him widespread recognition at the ceremony.

Recognising police excellence in KwaZulu-Natal carries significance for communities grappling with high crime rates, as it reinforces accountability and motivates officers to maintain standards that directly affect public safety. For local businesses and residents, initiatives like the crime prevention WhatsApp group demonstrate practical, low-cost solutions that improve response times and foster collaboration between law enforcement and private security. Sustained investment in such recognition programmes could help strengthen trust between police and the communities they serve across the province.
