Level 4 weather alert issued for KZN

Residents across parts of KwaZulu-Natal have been placed on high alert as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) warned of dangerous thunderstorms expected to batter the province over the weekend. The warning, classified as a Yellow Level 4 alert, covers the north-eastern regions of the province and took effect from 2 pm on Saturday, remaining in place until Sunday, 29 March.

The severe weather system is forecast to bring widespread flooding in low-lying areas, with roads and bridges particularly vulnerable to inundation. Authorities have cautioned that powerful winds and hail accompanying the storms could inflict significant damage on buildings, vehicles, livestock and livelihoods across affected communities.

"Severe thunderstorms leading to flooding of low-lying areas, susceptible roads and bridges as well as strong damaging winds and hail, resulting in damage to infrastructure, settlements (informal), property, vehicles, livelihood and livestock [are] expected over the north-eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal."

Informal settlements in the path of the storm system face heightened risks, with SAWS emphasising that both property and critical infrastructure could sustain considerable damage during the severe weather event.

Sweltering conditions add to weather woes

Beyond the storm threat, forecasters have also flagged oppressively hot and humid conditions along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline and nearby inland areas. The combination of heat and moisture is expected to create extremely uncomfortable conditions for residents throughout the weekend period.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) has called on all residents in affected areas to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. The provincial government confirmed the weather warning spans from Saturday afternoon through to Sunday.

Multiple provinces are in the firing line this weekend, with the Northern Cape also among regions covered by weather advisories issued by SAWS. Authorities across the affected areas are monitoring conditions closely as the storm system moves through.

Residents have been encouraged to avoid crossing flooded roads and rivers, secure loose items around their properties, and seek shelter immediately should conditions deteriorate rapidly in their vicinity.

KwaZulu-Natal's economy, heavily reliant on agriculture and tourism along its coastline, faces significant disruption as severe storms threaten transport routes, supply chains, and smallholder farming operations across the province. Communities in informal settlements remain especially vulnerable given limited drainage infrastructure and inadequate emergency housing alternatives. Businesses dependent on weekend trade could suffer losses from reduced foot traffic and property damage. How swiftly provincial disaster management teams respond will likely determine the scale of recovery costs in the weeks ahead.
