A two-storey building collapse in Johannesburg on Monday has left four people dead, with rescue crews working urgently to reach three individuals still trapped under the wreckage and five others unaccounted for.
Mgcini Tshwaku, the City of Johannesburg's mayoral committee member for Community Safety, confirmed that the victims had been working on the ground floor when a section of the structure gave way, burying them beneath it.
According to Tshwaku, rescue teams can hear one of the three trapped workers communicating from under the debris. The employees are believed to be pinned beneath a concrete slab that came down during the incident.
Tshwaku further revealed that one of those trapped may require an on-site leg amputation owing to the extent of his injuries. Emergency personnel are standing by for a doctor to arrive and carry out the procedure at the scene.
