Giriyondo border post back in operation after two-month closure due to flooding - South African news

Cross-border route between Kruger and Mozambique restored

The Giriyondo border post, situated in the northern section of the Kruger National Park, has officially reopened to visitors and tourists on Tuesday following a two-month shutdown caused by severe flood damage.

JP Louw, spokesperson for SANParks, confirmed that the border post control authority gave the green light for the route to resume operations, allowing travellers to once again make use of the distinctive cross-border passage.

Heavy rainfall in January forced the closure of the Letaba low water bridge along the road between Mopanie and Phalaborwa, as well as several other routes within the game reserve. The bridge was submerged under floodwaters at the time, rendering it impassable.

"The Giriyondo border post serves as an important link between the Kruger National Park and the Limpopo National Park in Mozambique, enabling nature lovers to experience the rich biodiversity of the Greater Limpopo Transboundary Conservation Area."

Boost for ecotourism and regional cooperation

With the crossing now functional once more, visitors can look forward to uninterrupted travel between the two national parks. The restored route is expected to bolster ecotourism, foster cultural exchange and strengthen regional collaboration in the conservation of biodiversity across borders.

Louw said the organisation welcomed the resumption of operations at the border post and expressed gratitude to all stakeholders who played a role in the recovery and restoration efforts.

Tourists intending to use the route have been urged to plan their journeys in advance and to ensure they meet all necessary border crossing and park entry requirements before setting out.

The reopening of Giriyondo border post carries significant implications for communities and businesses in Limpopo province that depend on cross-border tourism revenue. Local lodges, guides, and service providers faced two months of reduced visitor traffic during peak season, straining livelihoods tied to the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area. As ecotourism operations resume, the restored route could accelerate economic recovery in the region, though future flood seasons may continue to pose infrastructure challenges requiring long-term investment.
