Restoring dignity through basic necessities
Hundreds of learners from nine schools across the Greater Taung and Mamusa Local Municipalities received new school shoes on Friday, courtesy of a handover programme led by Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Kenny Morolong. The distribution took place at Uurpan Safari Lodge in Schweizer-Reneke, drawing together community leaders, education stakeholders, School Governing Bodies, local councillors, government representatives and partner organisations dedicated to uplifting rural communities.
Morolong used the occasion to highlight the persistent challenges confronting learners in rural parts of the country, stressing that something as fundamental as a pair of school shoes can transform a child's educational experience. He recounted the story of a young boy who once had to travel long distances to school without adequate footwear, illustrating how access to basic resources remains a barrier for many.
"Sometimes what appears small can carry great meaning. A simple pair of school shoes can represent dignity, confidence and the opportunity for a child to walk into a classroom knowing that they belong there," he said.
The initiative is part of a wider drive to bolster education and strengthen communities throughout the North West Province. It was made possible through a collaborative effort involving Infrastructure South Africa, Brand South Africa and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), along with private sector support from KPMG. Together, these partners ensured that hundreds of young people could return to their classrooms equipped with proper footwear.
Honouring educators and calling for collective responsibility
Beyond the shoe handover, the Deputy Minister paid tribute to the vital role that teachers and school leadership play in moulding the next generation. Two recently retired school principals from the district were recognised for their decades of service in education. Morolong noted that their impact stretched well beyond the walls of their classrooms, living on through the countless learners they had mentored and guided over the years.
He also issued a broader appeal for unity between government, business and communities in the pursuit of nation building, arguing that meaningful progress depends on collective effort.
"When government and business work together with purpose, we can create meaningful change in the lives of our people, especially our children," he said.
Morolong urged communities to safeguard and champion their local schools as vital centres of learning and development. He insisted that education is a shared responsibility that extends beyond teachers and government alone.
"Our schools must once again become centres of pride for our communities. Education is not only the responsibility of teachers or government. It belongs to all of us."
Turning his attention to the young recipients of the shoes, the Deputy Minister encouraged them to wear their new footwear with pride and to stay committed to their studies. He reminded them that their futures hold limitless potential, envisioning a day when doctors, teachers, scientists and leaders would emerge from among them to help shape the country's destiny. The programme forms part of continuing efforts to ensure that every child in South Africa has the support they need to learn and succeed.
