Integrated outreach programme targets West Rand's vulnerable residents

Deputy Minister of Social Development Ganief Hendricks is spearheading a major community services drive at the Mohlakeng Old Age Home on Gauteng's West Rand today, bringing a suite of essential government offerings directly to residents who need them most.

The initiative falls under the Integrated Community Registration Outreach Programme (ICROP), a flagship project of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) that aims to bridge the gap between government services and communities in underserved areas. The programme is specifically designed to cut travel distances, reduce costs, and streamline administrative hurdles for vulnerable citizens.

"ICROP ensures that services are delivered efficiently and directly to the people who need them most, by reducing travel distances, cutting costs, and simplifying administrative processes."

The outreach event coincides with Human Rights Month observances, underscoring the government's pledge to uphold the rights of every citizen while bolstering social protection measures. It places particular emphasis on expanding access to vital social services for older persons, children, and people living with disabilities.

Wide-ranging services available on site

Residents attending the Mohlakeng event will have access to an extensive array of services provided jointly by the Department of Social Development (DSD), SASSA, and several other government partners. These include social grant applications and enquiries, assistance with obtaining birth certificates and identity documents, as well as dedicated support for survivors of gender-based violence and substance abuse.

Social work services and referrals will also be available on the day, together with offerings from the National Development Agency. Additional support will be provided by the Department of Health, the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), and the Public Protector's office.

The multi-stakeholder approach reflects the government's broader strategy of consolidating service delivery into single community touchpoints, ensuring that citizens — particularly those in remote or marginalised areas — do not have to travel long distances or navigate complex bureaucratic channels to access the help they are entitled to.

Deputy Minister Hendricks' presence at the event signals senior government commitment to hands-on engagement with communities, particularly during a month dedicated to reflecting on the hard-won rights enshrined in the Constitution and the ongoing work required to make those rights a lived reality for all South Africans.

Bringing multiple government services to a single location in Mohlakeng addresses a persistent challenge for vulnerable communities across South Africa, where transport costs and bureaucratic complexity often prevent residents from accessing grants, identity documents, and social support. For elderly residents, children, and people with disabilities on the West Rand, this consolidated approach could reduce financial strain and improve uptake of critical services. If scaled effectively, similar outreach programmes may help close service delivery gaps in other underserved areas.
