Unidentified man's body pulled from waters at Coney Glen

Police in Knysna have launched a search for the family of an unidentified man after his body was recovered from the ocean near the iconic Knysna Heads on Tuesday afternoon.

The grim discovery was made at approximately 14:00 on 24 March 2026, when a member of the public spotted what appeared to be a body floating in the water at Coney Glen, a coastal area situated close to the Knysna Heads.

Emergency services were immediately alerted, and law enforcement officers were dispatched to the scene to investigate the report.

"Police divers were dispatched to the sea and the body was retrieved."

Investigation under way

Authorities believe the deceased man was in his mid-sixties, though his identity has not yet been established. Detectives are now appealing to the public for assistance in locating his next of kin so that formal identification procedures can be completed.

An inquest docket has been opened to allow investigators to determine the circumstances surrounding the man's death. The case remains under active police investigation as officers work to piece together what led to the tragic incident.

Anyone with information that may assist in identifying the deceased or shedding light on the matter is urged to contact Knysna detectives.

The recovery of an unidentified body near the Knysna Heads raises concerns for coastal safety along the Garden Route, a region heavily dependent on tourism and outdoor recreation. For local businesses, prolonged investigations or negative publicity could affect visitor confidence during peak seasons. The community's assistance in identifying the deceased remains crucial, and the outcome of the inquest will likely determine whether additional safety measures are implemented along this popular stretch of coastline.
