Brown's brilliance sparks South African fightback
The Blitzboks endured a shaky beginning to their Vancouver Sevens campaign but ultimately found their rhythm to dispatch Great Britain 21–5 in their tournament opener. A flurry of needless penalties in the early exchanges threatened to derail South Africa's efforts before the match had truly begun.
It took a moment of individual magic from Ronald Brown to jolt the side into life. The quick-footed playmaker carved through the British defensive line to dot down for the opening try, shifting the momentum firmly in the Blitzboks' favour.
Great Britain's task became even more difficult shortly afterwards when Matt Davidson was shown a yellow card for intentionally swatting the ball away. Despite enjoying a numerical advantage, the South Africans were unable to convert the extra man into points, heading into the break with a slender 7–0 lead.

Van Wyk and Oosthuizen seal comfortable victory
Any hopes of a Great Britain comeback were swiftly extinguished. Shilton van Wyk, who was recognised as SA Rugby's sevens player of the year, pounced on a kick-off error with devastating pace, racing clear to touch down and restore South Africa's commanding cushion.
Ryan Oosthuizen then added the finishing touch with a late try that put the result beyond all doubt, sealing a convincing 21–5 triumph for the South Africans in what proved to be a professional, if imperfect, performance.

Dewald Human was reliable with the boot, slotting two conversions, while Brown added another to round off an influential individual display. For Great Britain, Lloyd-Gilmour's try was the only bright spot in an otherwise challenging afternoon.
The Blitzboks now turn their attention to a clash against Spain in the early hours of Sunday morning South African time, before a potentially decisive encounter against New Zealand later in the day at 05:40 SA time. Coach and players alike will be hoping for a sharper start as the tournament progresses into its knockout stages.
